Hyperreality and hyperrealism is woven into digital realms though so many mediums some of which will be explored in this webpage. It is unclear sometimes whether what we are viewing is real or not. Our perception of what is reality is can be based on what we see, hear, feel or touch, these senses are what the imagination grants us to make a judgment weather what we are experiencing is false or real. If an object is real then it exists whether our consciousness says so or not. Hyperreality is images placed within an environment to make us perceive them as reality. Examples could be brochures advertising cars or model magazines which have been air brushed to perfection, constructed images or objects become hyperrealism.
The digital world we live in today has had a profound impact on Art. It has revolutionised artistic creativity, accessibility, consumer consumption and awareness. The internet and digital media have become part of people’s everyday lives so it goes without saying it will have impacted artists and their work.
Image manipulation occurs when a digital image or photograph is altered, copied, adapted, or changed in any manner from its original state. This can be done intentionally by the user or unintentionally when our data is shared online. There have been quite significant consequences politically and socially when privacy and ethical considerations have been breached.
Speaking from experience it has changed the way I work for the last three years. Building websites to promote my craft, editing and altering my own photos to get the ‘best image’.
Having taken myself away from the digital consumer world of TV, News , social media and internet between 2017-2020 I’ve been amazed at how much everything has changed during that time. I now have clearer understanding of how these things effected my mental wellbeing.
The internet has a clear and present influence on our perception of what is Real and what is Fake. Sometimes it’s hard to define the differences. With access so many images at our fingertips how can we really know if an image has been altered or manipulated? We carry access to the digital world in our pockets!
I’m providing a list of all the websites and apps I have used and my views on their ease of use and access .
Adobe - photoshop - for experienced users, and those learning the craft of editing.
Adobe - Creative cloud - simple features good ease of use.
Cap-cut - application - simple self explanatory and free.
studio app - free with my web-building service go daddy. Good for photo editing and collage creating.
https://www.craiyon.com/ website - free. With adds. Simple effective.
https://www.media.io.com/ - image alteration. For cartoon or template animation of an image you provide.
Stock images from internet or other creative apps.
Tech I have used. Gen 9 IPad and iPhone 15proMax .
This image was created using AI technology which manipulates images into well known characters. Cartoon images are considered forms of Hyperreality due to their amplified and exaggerated representations of people and objects. Cartoon images have always existed to provide an alternative view or comical factor. The emotion they invoke in audiences can vary from political to comical sometimes both. Starting out with black and white sketch images (P, Beard. 2018). The famous Phil May author of Punch Uk comic in 1837, produced images which soon became sort after by the advertising industry.
These concepts caught on and small comic strips would start to appear in newspapers and finally into comics strips and zines in their own right comics and cartoon images are much loved by children and adults. The Simpsons is a great example of this. Using what’s going on the world to exaggerate scenarios or scenes to make the viewer feel more intensely about the story or themes they are trying to convey to audiences. (Insider 2021) explains the decades of change in appearance of the drawings for the Simpson characters and the impact of digital technology and media has had on their production of cartoon series.
Technology has exploded Into the traditional art world of museums and paintings on to platforms creating accessibility to all of us. This research shows how photoshop and other digital art media’s have developed. Pictures and images are all my own creative design using a variety of tools technology and techniques
Digital Art has most certainly revolutionised the modern Art World as we know it. More and more museums such as the Twist museum in London, are using digitally reproduced images to create subversive soundings with projected images in large spaces to create whole sensory experience for the viewer. The interactive nature between audience and artist has never been more closely linked..
“Draw an image of myself as a female, with my body as tree roots in the ground and hair growing as roots to the sky. Use lots of bright colour and detail.“
I used https://www.craiyon.com/ to create these AI images. The distortion and variety of images available with each search shows the Technology is still learning from itself. (Elgammal, A. 2018)
This Ai generated image was produced using crayon.com using words to describe my visual image, draw myself as graffiti on my body like a stained glass window. This was intentional giving the machin a few concepts and see how it layered them together. While slightly distorted in areas, I was happy with the result.
Experiment and play is the key to success with theses tools. Use descriptive simple words, and have a go!
This was my first Ai generated art work. Software used was found at media.io.com. Simple free website with options for upgrades to more detailed AI art work.
Every girl wanted to be Barbie so thought I would give it go at 43!, very amusing and complimentary pixels.

This image made me look like the devil! Photoshop was tricky and time consuming but the results are worth it. Mirroring image once I have found the correct flow of fire to match the flow of my hair. After 10 hours I researched different ways to get my desired outcome. Which was changing my hair into 4 elements of earth, wind Fire and Water. This experiment is on going with too many images to share at this time. I’ve used some of the water features in images below.
Definition of “Selfie” An image of oneself taken by oneself using a digital camera especially for posting on social media.
This was my first brave attempt to alter my own image. Having struggled with body image issues like so many people I was wary about even docmenting outcomes. I used an ’selfi’ image then using a simple free tool On iphone I turned my image into a sticker. This In turn chose the cartoon setting. I sent the image to myself which then saved as an image in its own right. This Hypereality theme of creative works is vast and so
The above image was created using studio app via go daddy software. I asked my iPhone (15proMax) to show me images stored in my phone related to water. I had only ever used this once before to gather pictures of my work. In a review article over 15 years ago our phones had the capacity to collect collate and share our images and data so this isn’t new technology. (Cho, S. 2007) Above is a collection of what came up. The main image is an Ai generated picture I created using the words “show myself in female form, sea goddess with water as hair”. the other images where photos or random screen shots. Please note the map. I believe my phone thought the map was a river. Show the similar patterns and colours are connected as if a human were to perceive the image.
it continues to amaze me on a personal level, and inspired me to build this website. ive always had a love for sports cars. Sketching them photographing them, even driving theM
Ai Art. Wow! What a great tool and using what I tested to be the best free software was craiyon. You text your image in words and it produces 9 outcomes. Often these outcomes vary. using the right wording is key to unlocking a truly original creation,
This image was a snap shot of North Decota in USA, grid reference….47°59'23"N 97°28'15"W .
I was inspired to explore this area from watching a tv documentary called “what on earth” unexpectedly stumbling onto such amazing bright green colour tones and textures. The zoom tools enable quick and easy access to vast landscapes from a 2d and 3d perspective. Satellite image was last updated in 2015.
Google earth isn’t new but how it is being used to create works of art are evident to how artists are breaking tech barriers to find new ways of developing thier skills. The works of David hockey have a striking resemblance to some of the formations and patterns. David hockey embraced the digital art world during times of Covid, using his iPad to create thousands of digitaly drawn pictures.
More images can be found on the photo gallery below.
After the workshop on social media and influencers I used what I had learned and put into action creating a reel of my favourite pictures relating to Valentine’s Day. I added music, words to each picture and other information throughout such as qr code and address of business . These all keep the viewers attention and interest. As you can see it got 493 views which is the most I have ever received for one video or reel of pictures. Digital art mixed with social media can grow your business.
